Austin, Texas, is a city of contrasts—vibrant and creative, yet grappling with a deepening housing crisis. As costs soar and availability dwindles, many residents, especially those transitioning out of chronic homelessness, face an uphill battle to find stable, dignified homes. Community First! Village, an innovative initiative by Mobile Loaves & Fishes (MLF), offers a transformative solution. This master-planned community goes beyond temporary relief, aiming to restore dignity and foster lasting connections.
A Closer Look at the Micro-Homes
Mark Odom Studio is shaping phases three and four of Community First! Village, a 127-acre expansion set to welcome residents in the Summer of 2025. The firm has crafted six distinct micro-home designs, ranging from 144 to 200 square feet. Though compact, these homes are thoughtfully designed to reflect the unique needs and personalities of their residents. Features like private porches and, in one case, a two-story layout add both functionality and character.
These Austin micro-homes are organized into 14 “Neighborhoods of Knowingness,” a concept pioneered by MLF. By clustering homes around shared spaces—kitchens, laundry areas, bathhouses, and outdoor gathering spots—this layout encourages interaction and strengthens community bonds. Mark Odom Studio’s designs ensure residents feel both independent and connected, striking a balance essential for rebuilding lives.
Crafting Spaces with Purpose
The firm’s design process is rooted in three core principles: listening, observing, and editing. For the micro-homes, the studio began by deeply listening to MLF and the future residents. Through extensive consultations and site visits, the team observed the existing community dynamics and environmental factors. This meticulous process allowed them to identify opportunities to enhance the living experience while respecting the site’s constraints. The editing phase refined the designs to ensure each home was functional yet personal—a true reflection of the resident’s identity and needs. The result is a collection of homes that serve as personalized sanctuaries, promoting dignity and well-being.

This approach exemplifies the studio’s broader design philosophy: creating experiential architecture that improves daily experiences, responds to context, and fosters placemaking and longevity. It’s a testament to their ability to turn small spaces into powerful catalysts for change.
Collaboration at the Core
Collaboration is a cornerstone of Mark Odom Studio’s work, and the Community First! Village project is no exception. The studio partnered closely with MLF, local authorities, and community members to align the designs with the village’s mission and the city’s regulations. By prioritizing open communication and mutual respect, the studio ensured the project exceeded expectations.
This process mirrors their approach across all projects: listening to clients’ real needs and delivering solutions that honor their vision while respecting boundaries. It’s a method that builds trust and yields results, making Mark Odom Studio a sought-after partner for transformative projects.
Leveraging Multifamily Expertise
With a diverse portfolio spanning redevelopment, mixed-use, and multifamily housing, Mark Odom Studio brought significant expertise to this project. Their work on Austin projects like the Enfield Condos and Industry SOMA showcases their ability to design equitable, sustainable living spaces. For the micro-homes, they applied this experience to maximize space efficiency without sacrificing comfort or aesthetics. Each unit feels intimate yet inclusive—a hallmark of their multifamily design skill.
A standout feature is the private porches, inspired by observing how residents used outdoor spaces in the existing village to connect with neighbors while maintaining personal territory. By integrating porches, the studio created a seamless blend of private and communal areas, encouraging social interaction while respecting privacy. This detail underscores their focus on designing for the user’s daily experience.
A Ripple Effect of Change
The Austin micro-homes at Community First! Village do more than provide a roof—they spark transformation. Stable housing gives residents a foundation to reclaim their lives, while the communal layout fosters support networks that combat isolation. This holistic model boosts mental and emotional well-being, offering a fresh start rooted in dignity.
Beyond the individual, this project addresses broader challenges in Texas affordable housing. Micro-homes are efficient and cost-effective, making them a scalable solution for cities like Austin. Mark Odom Studio’s work here showcases architecture for social good, blending sustainability and equity to create a blueprint others can follow.
